Bridging Course for Enrolled Nurses Leading to Registration as a General Nurse or Psychiatric Nurse – R683
Apart from training and development of student nurses the Academy prepares incumbents for working environment readiness and skills to overcome the challenges of the profession. The need to prepare students for all kinds of patient condition and ability to work with people in a multi-cultural environment forms the basis for training.
PROCESS FOR ACHIEVING THE VISION AND MISSION OF THE ACADEMY OF NURSING EDUCATION AND HEALTHCARE TRAINING
The nurse education and training offered at the Academy of Nursing Education and Healthcare Training will align itself with the International Council of Nurses (ICN) principles in addressing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through the primary health care (PHC) approach.
PHILOSOPHICAL BASIS OF THE CURRICULUM
This curriculum serves to support government initiatives in producing quality health care workers in line with the plan as outlined in the National Strategic Plan for Nurse Education, Training and Practice 2012/13 – 2016/17
PURPOSE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PROGRAMME IN LINE WITH THE NQF
The purpose of the programme is to provide learners with the basic knowledge of nursing, including affective, cognitive and psychomotor skills.
The knowledge will emphasize general principles of nursing and their application in the provision of basic nursing care.
The nurse who completes this qualification will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of theory and practice of basic nursing care in all nursing activities
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate basic nursing care for individuals and groups throughout the lifespan
- Demonstrate professionalism when rendering basic nursing care
- Treat patients with respect
RATIONALE FOR THE PROGRAMME (WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF HUMAN RESOURCES FOR HEALTH AND NATIONAL HEALTH NEEDS)
This programme serves to provide an entry level qualification to the profession of nursing.
It also seeks to combine nursing care that provides a curative aspect of care, prevention of disease as well as promotion of health for individuals and groups in the hospital and in the community to affect a strong primary health care approach
Learners who obtain this qualification will be deemed competent in applying basic knowledge, affective, cognitive and conceptual skills and practice competence to articulate to higher studies in nursing
The exit level outcomes of the programme will collectively provide the learner with practical, foundational and reflexive competencies in nursing care.
STATEMENT OF INTENT
This programme will be implemented for the following purposes:
- Equip auxiliary nurses with cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills to function within the scope of practice as outlined by the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- Produce auxiliary nurses who are competent in providing basic nursing care to health care consumers in the hospital and in the community.
- Enable auxiliary nurses to apply the principles of the nursing process in the provision of basic nursing care
- Enable the auxiliary nurse to communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team context.

On completion of the learning programme the learner will be able to:
- Apply basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biophysics, pharmacology and microbiology in the provision of nursing care.
- Communicate effectively in a variety of ways within a nursing content.
- Demonstrate appropriate methods of interacting sensitively and professionally with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Use the scientific nursing approach to provide for the basic needs of individuals and groups in a variety of health care settings in the hospital, at home and in the community.
- Provide for appropriate emergency care and first aid principles
